The Door Refinishing Process
A proper door refinishing is a full-day process — not a quick brush-over. Here's what a professional refinishing looks like from start to finish:
Remove & assess
The door is removed from its frame and inspected. We check for soft wood, rot, failing joints, and moisture damage that would change the recommendation.
Strip & sand
Existing finish is stripped or sanded down to bare wood (or sound substrate). For painted doors, we prime over sound paint — stripping to bare wood isn't always necessary. For stained doors, stripping to bare wood gives the best result.
Repair
Minor cracks, dents, and gaps are filled with wood filler or epoxy filler and sanded smooth. Deep rot or structural damage is flagged before proceeding.
Prime
A coat of bonding primer is applied. For bare wood, this step is critical for adhesion and protection. For colour changes from dark to light, a grey or tinted primer reduces the number of finish coats needed.
Finish coats
Two finish coats are applied, with light sanding between coats. We use high-quality exterior paints or varnishes rated for exterior wood in wet climates — not interior paint brushed on.
Rehang & hardware
The door is rehung, hardware reinstalled, and gaps checked. We leave the entryway clean and secured.
